To Commemorate the Vietnam War, These Vets Sing the Unofficial “Vietnam Anthem”

2015 marks the 50th anniversary of when regular United States combat units were deployed to Vietnam.

To commemorate this important mark in American History, the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum put this video together, which, in addition to footage from the war itself, shows Vietnam War veterans lip-synching to the song, “We’ve Gotta Get Out of This Place”.

The song, released by The Animals in 1965, was immensely popular with United States Armed Forces GIs during the Vietnam War. It was frequently requested of, and played by, American Forces Vietnam Network disc jockeys, according to a report in the Indianapolis Star.

In 2015, two University of Wisconsin–Madison employees, one a Vietnam veteran, began an in-depth survey of hundreds of Vietnam veterans, and found that “We Gotta Get out of This Place” resonated the strongest among all the music of the time then: “We had absolute unanimity [that] this song [was] the touchstone. This was the Vietnam anthem.”
