Country music fans everywhere celebrated when the song “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice won for Song Of The Year at the CMA awards in 2013. But how many of you know the story behind this amazing song?
The lyrics to “I Drive Your Truck” are tinged with frustration and mourning as it follows the journey of someone who is dealing with the loss of a soldier. The surprising thing about this song is not that it won an award, but that it tells a true story of how a father handled the sudden loss of his son.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti was killed in Afghanistan while on a tour of deployment, saving the life of a fellow soldier. Monti was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on the battlefield. Following his death, Jared’s father felt the deep loss. He finds a measure of peace, however, in driving his son’s pickup truck still.
That father’s way of remembering his son was the inspiration for the hit country song, a tribute to Jared Monti, his father, and all other Gold Star families who have lost a loved one.
