Justin Cilburn, a Specialist in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, had something happen to him while he was serving in Iraq that he didn’t expect prior to deployment. He became friends with two local children in North Baghdad, named Ali and Ahmed. The one was shy and the other was outgoing. They soon became friends.
With the help of powerful animation, Cilburn recounts the story to his wife in the video below. It is a heartbreaking story about the realities of war, but one that needs to be told.
Justin Cilburn admits in the video that prior to meeting Ali and Ahmed, he wasn’t very good with children. That soon changed, however, and the two boys had a lasting impact on his life.
As Cilburn says, they became, “about as close as people who don’t speak the same language can be.” But that abruptly changed, and in a way that cannot be reversed. Not all stories have a happy ending, and that is the nature of war.
