World War II Veteran Is Honored With Surprise Celebration For His 100th Birthday

World War II veteran Joseph Jonientz has just turned 100 years old, and Honor Flight Syracuse, his community, family and friends made sure to celebrate his incredible milestone in a way that he’d never forget.

His birthday celebration consisted of a four-gun salute by the Manlius VFW Post, a special caravan with music serenade, and a special flag proclamation from Congressman John Katko presented by the 174th ATKW Honor Guard.

“I expected maybe a half of a dozen people,” Jonientz told Local Syracuse. “I didn’t realize I was appreciated that much.”

And appreciated is an understatement.

Although much of Jonientz’ life was a difficult struggle, he worked for everything he’s accomplished and has been an amazing dad.

Jonientz enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, where he served in the 339th SVC Squadron in Africa and Italy. He was trained as an aircraft technician, patched bullet holes and planes, and rebuilt them.

After serving overseas for three years, he finally returned home in 1945 and started a family.

His family and the entire community is happy to acknowledge Jonientz for everything he’s done in his life and what he did for this country.
