Parents To Honor Their Fallen Marine Son By Revamping A Room At An Animal Shelter
The Benton-Franklin Humane Society is about to receive a new meet and greet room. It is being built in honor of a former dog lover and fallen Marine, Dietrich Schmieman.
The area where people can meet potential pets for the first time is being built by Schmieman’s parents. The young man was killed in an accident involving a military airplane in 2017. His parents said that he loved pets.
He got his own dog, Penny, from a Humane Society.
“We would love to have a photo in there with his dog Penny and just make it a comfortable space where people can see the potential maybe in a photograph may be in the way the room feels.” Susan Schmieman said.
The room will receive new furniture, new floors and a fresh coat of paint. There will also be a plaque installed for Dietrich.
Dietrich’s life insurance is paying for the meet and greet room donation. His parents said that he always loved helping animals in need and they know that he would have wanted his money spent in that way.
It is hoped that the room will be ready in time for spring.
