It is said that dogs are man’s best friends, but dogs like Ranger deserve at least the rank of guardian angel. In fact, this German Shepherd saved more than 1,000 lives during his military service in Afghanistan where a deep friendship with Army Specialist John Nyerghes had also been born. However, after a debilitating injury Ranger was carelessly dismissed and scheduled for euthanasia without a shred of compassion. Luckily, veterinarian Greg Meredith managed to nurse Ranger back to health and contacted Nyerghes, who had been dismissed from service as well. Soldier and dog are now going to enjoy some peaceful civilian life together.

Check out more stories about heroic dogs who spend their entire lives — and sometimes even sacrifice them — protecting soldiers and civilians all over the world.
